If you're pretty sharp on the computer and you don't have any trouble learning new applications, you can save yourself alot of CASH by using Zen Cart. Zen Cart is a completely FREE open source shopping cart system. Open source just means that you have access to all of the programming code of the software in case you want to alter the program. All you have to do is download the program files and then install it on your server. osCommerce is another FREE open source shopping cart system. It is very similar to Zen-Cart. I haven't had much experience with osCommerce, but you can find examples of sites made with osCommerce here: http://shops.oscommerce.com/

I use Bizhosting. Bizhosting is a comprehensive eCommerce solution that includes a very versatile shopping cart.  It's not the least expensive solution, but it is easy to use and at the time I got started, it was definitely the best setup. You can have any number of different variations for each product. Their system can also track inventory. All of the pages are fully customizable. It comes complete with a manager that helps you keep track of all of your customers and orders. One of the features that I like is that you can export any of your customers or orders into a spreadsheet. You can also use it to customize your order invoices if you don't like the default format. If you don't already have your own domain name registered, you can register one through Bizhosting and they take care of the DNS setup and everything. Customer support is great too. It does take a while to set up if you are adding lots of products though. If you are somewhat computer saavy, this is a solid eCommerce choice. This is what I started OuterSports.com with and I still host OuterSports.com with Bizhosting!

You need to ask for examples of each coders work before you choose one. Many of them will include links to examples of their own work with their bids.
